Planning for Holiday Healthy Eating

One of the most important aspects to success in healthy eating is planning. You should plan ahead what you're going to eat. That way you're not as tempted to overeat, not AS tempted - it's still a temptation to overeat, especially this time of year. There are more parties, more celebrations at work, more get-togethers, more eating out. For all of these, planning ahead is better. Here are some hints to remind myself and anybody reading:

- never go to the event hungry
- drink a glass of water before you go
- bring something you know you can eat (like a vegie tray with low fat dip, or fruit)
- think ahead of what you will order if it's a restaurant and eat that
- have dessert at home later or skip it, or share a dessert
- skip a course and always have salad first
- concentrate on the other people and not on the food
- think ahead about something you can start the conversation with, then spend most of the time listening - everybody will think you're the best guest ever
- have a very small amount of a special treat, not a full serving
- choose vegie, fish, seafood, or chicken main course if possible
- stay away from heavy sauces, choose tomato-based or clear
- pass up the bread (this is one is VERY hard for me, since I love bread - I make my rule to only eat it if it's worth the calories which means for me is homemade, warm, and special - NOT store bought
- don't skip breakfast or lunch or "save up the calories" before a party; you'll be so hungry you'll be sure to overeat
- have one drink, add ice, make it last, walk around holding it but only sip; have a glass of water with ice (nobody knows the difference)

Add yours!

RULE #1: DO NOT EAT COTTAGE CHEESE...( The only people I have ever seen eating the stuff is fat folk)

RULE #2: Thanksgiving Morning..Watch the parades while drinking Starbucks Pike place (black no sugar) It keeps you out of the kitchen and avoids BLT's (bites, licks, tastes)
RULE #3: In the afternoon watch as many football games as possible while napping during boring parts of the game.

RULE # 4: On Thanksgiving Day, load up on salad, turkey, 1 helping of stuffing (large) one helping of mashed potatoes (Medium Large)
Grapes, bananas, pineapple and diet jello for dessert.

RULE #5: Go to the gym early that day, and go Friday and Saturday. You can easily work off the stuffing and mashed potatoes if you stick with 1 helping..
FINALLY: When the meal is over, DO NOT help clean the kitchen, too many temptations..which is why you need to watch football.

If this is not possible...eat out and avoid the washing dishes. (Please do not share these with Robbie Sue)

Today we made two posters. Third grade made What We Are Thankful for. Fourth made "Thanksgiving Traditions." Very interesting what they said.

Good rules. I'm not tempted by cleaning up. I am tempted when taking the turkey out. What always happens is about the time you get everything cleaned up, somebody comes back into the kitchen to take out some leftovers. My mother was notorious for this. However, she never ate much and prepared the meal before I took this over.

Our Y is closed on Thanksgiving, so we can go workout that day - bummer!
